Pony Canyon Records


The October 1, 1966 Nippon Broadcasting System, Inc. opened a record label division, called as Nippon Broadcasting System Service, Inc. to produce and market music Japanese artists. The division officially changed its name in 1970 to Pony, Inc. in order to coincide with the brand names that have been using previously. These were "PONYPak" for 8-track cassette from 1967, and "PONY" chassis since 1968. At this time, in 1970 another Japanese label Canyon Records Inc. was founded. In 1982, the Pony ventured into interactive content by producing software of PC games under the name of "Ponyca". In 1984 the company entered into licensing agreements with major foreign companies, MGM / UA, Vestron Video, Walt Disney Home Video and BBC Video and in 1985, established offices in New York and London. In 1986, Pony signed licensing agreements with A & M Records in 1989 with Virgin Records to handle both companies. The October 21, 1987, Pony Canyon and merged their operations to form Pony Canyon Records, Inc.
